Casino is an epic tale of power, avarice and corruption. It’s also a reminder that the casino business is a very risky venture – it makes money by encouraging patrons to gamble and lose money over and over again, despite the fact that most players will eventually win nothing due to the laws of probability.
This is a violent movie, and there are no “good guys.” The characters are mired in violence and treachery, and while we can admire De Niro’s Ace and Sharon Stone’s Ginger, we understand that their actions are self-serving and cruel. However, the scriptwriters do a good job of portraying their real-life counterparts without resorting to gratuitous violence for its own sake or simply for shock value.
