The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game in which players wager chips (representing money) against each other. The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. A player’s aim is to make the best five card “hand” using their own 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards. Players may also bluff, betting that they have a good hand when they do not. Players must call any bet if they have a superior hand or forfeit their chips in the pot.

Each betting interval in a round of poker begins with one player, designated by the rules of the specific poker variant being played, placing into the pot a number of chips equal to or greater than the amount put in by any player who came before them. The rest of the players in turn must either call, raise, or drop.

The higher the poker hand’s rank, the more valuable it is. The cards in a poker hand are ranked, from high to low, as Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4 and 2. Some games add wild cards or jokers that can take on the suit and rank of any other card. A game of poker can become exciting and fast paced if the players bet aggressively. Observe experienced players to learn how to spot tells and develop your own instincts. The key is to be patient and never rush into making a play. If you rush into a bet, chances are you’ll lose.
